PHIXER for Drums: snare top/bottom and OH/room phase that keep crack on mono fold
Snare top vs bottom, overheads vs rooms, or a stereo drum bus can feel huge in headphones. On phone playback, Bluetooth, club PA mono, or livestream fold, crack thins and kit body scoops. Polarity and mic distance come first. Free phase-repair helps after residual L/R fights remain on a stereo drum bed you must keep stereo. It is not a drum replacer, and it does not replace a true mono listen on the bus.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a polarity button, not a delay matcher, not a widener, and not a substitute for mic placement. Use it after hygiene, when residual spectral cancellation remains on a stereo bed you must keep stereo.
Three drum failure modes this page covers
- Snare top/bottom phase. Fine in cans; thin crack on phone or mono fold. Full checklist: Snare top/bottom mic phase.
- Overhead and room mic phase. OH pair vs room that cancel kit body on fold. Full checklist: Overhead & room mic phase.
- Guitar dual-cab cousin. Two paths that hollow on fold the same way a stereo drum blend can. Cousin guide: PHIXER for Guitar Cabs.
Fast drum mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Sum L+R on the drum bus or master (or monitor controller mono). Listen to snare crack, kick weight, and cymbal air.
- A/B stereo vs mono. Note what disappears: crack body, tom fill weight, stereo OH width that was actually cancellation.
- Mute bottom snare or room briefly. Flip polarity on each path. Note which combination restores mono crack and kit body.
- Confirm on a phone speaker or single earbud path, then again after any bus compressor / EQ pass, not only before cleanup.
Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)
1. True mono listen on the drum / program bus
Hard L+R sum or monitor mono. Habit: snare top/bottom checklist, OH/room checklist, and mono check workflow.
2. Mic placement and hero path before plugins
Prefer one clear hero for snare crack (usually top). Bottom for buzz/wires color, not as a second stereo width layer that fights the hero. Same idea for OH vs room: hero OH pair, quieter room for depth.
3. Polarity if a path flips
Inverted bottom snare, flipped OH, reversed room DI or interface. Flip Ø when crack or kit body returns. Guide: polarity vs phase.
4. Timing / delay-align before spectral tools
Bottom snare or room farther than the hero needs a few samples or ms, not a widener. Prefer aligning to the hero path for critical lows and crack.
5. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If a stereo drum bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo.
Drum path types
| Setup | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Snare top + bottom | Crack dips when summed | Polarity; mono listen; hero top |
| OH stereo pair | Kit body thins on phone | Polarity; mute test; OH/room checklist |
| OH + room blend | Width hollows on Bluetooth | Quieter room; timing to OH |
| Close kit + stereo bus | Printed stereo bus hollows on fold | Mono listen; polarity; snare checklist |
| Guitar dual-cab cousin | Two cabs cancel like top vs bottom | Guitar cabs guide |
| Kick in/out cousin | Beater vs shell fights on fold | Kick in/out guide |
Guitar cab cousin (short version)
- Cab 1 vs cab 2 on a guitar bed create the same mono-fold shape as snare top vs bottom or OH vs room on a drum bed.
- Sync and polarity still come first. Spectral tools after residual L/R fights only.

When not to reach for PHIXER
- Wrong polarity on bottom snare or room (flip Ø first).
- Room or bottom late vs hero by several ms (align timing first).
- You only need a true mono print from one hero mic (print mono; do not fake stereo width).
- Hard-panned twin OH where intentional stereo width matters more than mono body.
- Honesty list: When not to use PHIXER.
